Power and Fuel Economy

The CX-5 uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 hp (139 kW) and 186 lb-ft (252 Nm), paired with a 6-speed automatic. The gas Forester’s 2.5-liter boxer engine makes 180 hp (134 kW), and the Forester Hybrid makes 194 hp (145 kW) combined.

EPA ratings for the 2027 models weren’t posted when we checked. For 2026, the EPA rated the CX-5 at 26 mpg combined (9.0 L/100 km), the gas Forester at 29 mpg (8.1 L/100 km) and the Forester Hybrid at 35 mpg (6.7 L/100 km).

Say you drive 12,000 miles a year. At those 2026 ratings, a CX-5 would use about 462 gallons and a Forester Hybrid about 343, roughly 119 gallons less (our calculation).

Standard Features

Mazda makes blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors and adaptive cruise control standard on every CX-5, along with a 12.9-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto start with the Select.

Every Forester gets Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist suite, including adaptive cruise with lane centering. On the base Forester and Premium, blind-spot detection is either missing or part of a $1,200 option package, and the base model uses dual 7-inch screens with wired phone mirroring.

Safety Ratings

IIHS named both the 2026 Forester and the 2026 CX-5 a 2026 Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings in all three crash tests. The Forester’s headlights are rated Good, while the CX-5’s range from Good to Acceptable depending on trim. IIHS hadn’t posted 2027 results for either when we checked.

NHTSA gives the 2027 Forester and Forester Hybrid 5 stars overall but hadn’t published an overall rating for the CX-5. Its recall database listed no recalls for the 2027 Forester or for the 2026 and 2027 CX-5 when we checked.

Which One to Buy

For most buyers who drive a lot, the Forester Premium Hybrid is the value pick: $34,730 buys standard AWD and the best fuel economy in this comparison.

Pick the CX-5 if your budget tops out near $30,000 and you want blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors without paying for options.

Mazda says more CX-5 powertrains are coming in 2027, so check back before buying if a hybrid CX-5 is what you’re waiting for.

Prices, specifications, trims and availability vary by model year and market and can change at any time. Check the manufacturer’s official site or an authorized dealer before you buy.
