Comparisons

Katamereka Cars – Which compact hybrid SUV gives you more for the money? On paper, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 does: its cheapest hybrid costs $4,130 less than the cheapest 2027 Honda CR-V Hybrid, is rated 3 mpg higher by the EPA and tows more. The CR-V answers with a 5-star NHTSA rating that the new RAV4 doesn’t have yet.

This comparison covers the US-market 2026 RAV4 and 2027 CR-V, the current model years of each, using Toyota’s and Honda’s official pricing and specifications, EPA ratings and crash-test results. Prices exclude destination fees, which are $1,550 at Honda.

Price and Fuel Economy

The RAV4 LE starts at $31,900, and the CR-V Sport Hybrid 2WD at $36,030. Every RAV4 is a hybrid, while Honda’s cheaper CR-V trims (LX, EX and EX-L) use a gas turbo engine.

The EPA rates the front-drive RAV4 hybrid at 43 mpg combined (5.5 L/100 km) and the front-drive CR-V Hybrid at 40 mpg (5.9 L/100 km). Say you drive 12,000 miles a year: the RAV4 would use about 279 gallons and the CR-V about 300, roughly 21 gallons less for the Toyota (our calculation).

That fuel gap is small. The bigger difference is the $4,130 in starting price, and it shrinks at the top of each range: a CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid ($42,950) costs less than a RAV4 Limited ($43,300).

Space and Towing

Toyota lists 37.8 cubic feet (1,070 liters) of cargo space behind the rear seat on most RAV4 grades, slightly more than the CR-V Hybrid’s 36.3 cubic feet (1,028 liters).

Towing is where they split. Toyota rates most all-wheel-drive RAV4 grades for 3,500 pounds (1,588 kg), but the CR-V Hybrid is limited to 1,000 pounds (454 kg), according to Honda.

Safety Ratings and Recalls

IIHS rates the 2027 CR-V Poor in its updated moderate overlap test, which checks protection for rear-seat passengers. The 2026 RAV4 earns Acceptable in that test. Both get Good ratings in the small overlap and updated side tests, and neither holds a Top Safety Pick award.

NHTSA gives the 2027 CR-V Hybrid 5 stars overall but hadn’t rated the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid when we checked. NHTSA lists a recall for an inaccurate load-capacity label on the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and none for the 2027 CR-V.

Which One to Buy

For most buyers, the RAV4 Hybrid is the better value: it’s cheaper to start, slightly more efficient and can tow up to 3,500 pounds in most AWD grades.

The CR-V makes sense if you’d rather have NHTSA’s 5-star result today or are shopping fully loaded trims, where Honda’s top hybrid is the cheaper of the two. But should rear-seat safety decide it? If you regularly carry adults in back, the RAV4’s better IIHS moderate overlap result is worth weighing.

Look again once NHTSA publishes its RAV4 ratings, since that’s the one safety gap in this comparison still to be filled.

Prices, specifications, trims and availability vary by model year and market and can change at any time. Check the manufacturer’s official site or an authorized dealer before you buy.
