2027 Honda Civic Review: Price, MPG and Trims

The 2027 Civic adds a Sport-L trim and keeps a 49 mpg hybrid. Here's how the sedan and hatchback trims compare on price, efficiency and...

Car Buying

Katamereka Cars – The cheapest 2027 Honda Civic Hybrid starts at $29,695, just $2,700 more than the gas-only Sport sedan. For that money, the EPA rating jumps from 34 mpg to 49 mpg combined.

This review covers the 2027 Civic sedan and hatchback sold in the US, based on Honda’s official pricing, EPA ratings and published crash-test results. Here’s what each version gets you and which one makes the most sense.

Prices and Trims at a Glance

The sedan comes in five trims, while the hatchback skips the base LX and starts at the Sport. Every price below is Honda’s MSRP and doesn’t include the $1,295 destination charge.

TrimSedan MSRPHatchback MSRPEPA combined (sedan)
LX$24,995Not offered36 mpg
Sport$26,995$28,19534 mpg
Sport-L$28,495$29,69534 mpg
Sport Hybrid$29,695$30,89549 mpg
Sport Touring Hybrid$32,695$33,89549 mpg

Add destination and the range runs from $26,290 for an LX sedan to $33,990 for a Sport Touring Hybrid sedan, according to Honda‘s October 2026 pricing release (our calculation).

Gas or Hybrid Under the Hood

Gas trims use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a CVT, a transmission that uses a belt instead of fixed gears. The hybrid pairs a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine with two electric motors for a combined 200 hp (149 kW) and 232 lb-ft (315 Nm).

That torque figure is the number to notice.

Electric motors deliver torque from a standstill, which is why the hybrid is the quicker-responding Civic on paper. Honda’s pricing release doesn’t list output figures for the gas engine.

Real Fuel Savings From the Hybrid

The EPA rates the hybrid sedan at 50 mpg city, 47 highway and 49 combined (4.8 L/100 km). The LX sits at 36 combined (6.5 L/100 km), and the Sport and Sport-L drop to 34 (6.9 L/100 km).

Say you drive 12,000 miles a year.

At 36 mpg that’s about 333 gallons of gas, versus about 245 at 49 mpg, so roughly 88 gallons saved each year (our calculation). Whether that pays back the higher price depends on what gas costs where you live.

The hatchback hybrid is rated slightly lower at 47 combined, mostly because of a 44 mpg highway figure.

Cabin, Tech and the New Sport-L

The new Sport-L trim is the reason the 2027 lineup is easier to shop. It brings leather seats, heated and power-adjustable front seats, and dual-zone climate control, features Honda previously kept mostly for the hybrids.

The sedan’s trunk holds 14.8 cubic feet (419 liters) on every trim, according to Honda’s spec page. The top Sport Touring Hybrid also adds S+ Shift, a drive mode that fakes gear changes and rev-matched downshifts, borrowed from the 2026 Prelude.

Safety Ratings and Driver Assists

Every 2027 Civic comes with Honda Sensing, which bundles automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. All Sport-based trims add blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert.

For the 2026 model year, NHTSA gave the sedan, hatchback and both hybrids a 5-star overall rating, with 4 stars in the frontal crash test.

IIHS rated the 2026 sedan Good in the small overlap and updated side tests, but only Acceptable in its updated moderate overlap test. The 2026 Civic Hatchback earned a Top Safety Pick, while the sedan wasn’t named.

Which Civic Makes the Most Sense

But isn’t the LX enough? For pure commuting, it might be.

It has the best gas-only rating at 36 mpg and the same safety suite, though it misses the blind spot monitoring that Sport trims get.

If I had to pick one, it would be the Sport Hybrid sedan.

It costs $2,700 more than the Sport, adds 15 mpg combined and brings the strongest powertrain in the regular lineup. The Sport-L suits buyers who want leather and heated seats but drive too little to benefit from a hybrid.
