2026 Toyota RAV4 Review: Hybrid vs Plug-In, Price, MPG

The 2026 RAV4 is hybrid-only, from $31,900, with a 324-hp plug-in from $41,500. Here's how prices, EPA mpg, towing and safety compare.

Car Reviews

Katamereka Cars – The redesigned 2026 RAV4 is now sold only with hybrid power. The regular hybrid starts at $31,900 for the LE, and the plug-in hybrid starts at $41,500 for the SE, so the cheapest versions of each are $9,600 apart.

This review covers the US-market 2026 RAV4 and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, using Toyota’s official launch details, EPA fuel-economy ratings and IIHS crash-test results. All prices exclude Toyota’s dealer processing and handling fee. Here’s how the lineup breaks down.

Prices and Grades

Every 2026 RAV4 pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors. The hybrid makes 226 hp (169 kW) with front-wheel drive or 236 hp (176 kW) with all-wheel drive, according to Toyota.

XSEPlug-in hybridAWD$47,200
GR SportPlug-in hybridAWD$48,500

A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is standard, and the Limited, XSE and GR Sport get a 12.9-inch touchscreen. Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, which bundles automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, comes on every grade.

43 mpg for the Front-Drive Hybrid

The EPA rates the front-drive hybrid at 43 mpg combined (5.5 L/100 km), the best figure in the lineup. All-wheel-drive versions are rated at 41 to 42 mpg, and the Woodland, which rides 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) off the ground, gets 38 mpg (6.2 L/100 km).

That front-drive rating is a notch below the 44 mpg Toyota estimated at launch, so use the EPA numbers when comparing.

Say you drive 12,000 miles a year. A front-drive hybrid would use about 279 gallons, while a Woodland would use about 316, roughly 37 gallons more (our calculation).

Toyota rates the all-wheel-drive SE, XLE Premium and Woodland to tow 3,500 pounds (1,588 kg). The LE AWD is rated for just 1,750 pounds (794 kg).

The Plug-In Hybrid

The plug-in hybrid makes 324 hp (242 kW), and all-wheel drive is standard. Toyota quotes an EPA-estimated 54 miles (87 km) of electric range for the SE, though the plug-in wasn’t yet listed in the EPA’s own database when we checked.

Charging hardware depends on the grade. The XSE and Woodland get an 11 kW onboard charger plus DC fast charging, which Toyota says takes about 30 minutes from 10% to 80% under ideal conditions. The SE and GR Sport use a 7 kW charger and lack DC fast charging.

A plug-in SE costs $6,800 more than a hybrid SE. That premium pays off mainly if you can charge at home and most of your daily driving fits within the electric range.

Safety Ratings and Recalls

IIHS gives the 2026 RAV4 Good ratings in the small overlap and updated side tests, but Acceptable in the updated moderate overlap test. Its listing doesn’t show a Top Safety Pick award. Headlights and pedestrian crash prevention are both rated Good.

NHTSA lists the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid as not yet rated. Its recall database showed one recall for each when we checked.

The hybrid’s load-capacity label may show inaccurate values (NHTSA campaign 26V571000). The plug-in’s motor-generator software may reduce power or shut the system down at higher speeds (26V659000), and dealers will update it free of charge. Enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup before you sign anything.

Which RAV4 to Choose

For most buyers, the front-drive LE or SE hybrid is the value pick. It carries the best EPA rating in the lineup and the same standard safety suite as grades that cost over $10,000 more.

But what if you tow a small trailer or deal with snow? Then look at an all-wheel-drive SE or XLE Premium, since Toyota rates both for 3,500 pounds, double the LE AWD’s limit.

When you get a quote, ask the dealer to confirm whether it’s for the FWD or AWD version, because price, fuel economy and towing all change with it.

Prices, specifications, trims and availability vary by model year and market and can change at any time. Check the manufacturer’s official site or an authorized dealer before you buy.
