Katamereka Cars – The 2027 Mazda CX-5 starts at $29,990 and comes with all-wheel drive on every trim. There’s one engine, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, so choosing a CX-5 is mostly about picking the right equipment level.
This review covers the US-market 2027 CX-5, the second year of the redesigned model, using Mazda’s October 2026 pricing release and published IIHS results. Here’s what each trim adds and where the money is best spent.
Five Trims, One Powertrain
All five trims use the same 2.5-liter engine with 187 hp (139 kW) and 186 lb-ft (252 Nm), paired with a 6-speed automatic. That’s a conventional automatic with real gears, not the belt-driven CVT many rivals use.
| Trim | MSRP | Touchscreen |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 S | $29,990 | 12.9-inch |
| 2.5 S Select | $32,140 | 12.9-inch |
| 2.5 S Preferred | $34,550 | 12.9-inch |
| 2.5 S Premium | $37,450 | 12.9-inch |
| 2.5 S Premium Plus | $39,440 | 15.6-inch |
Prices exclude Mazda’s $1,595 destination and handling charge, so the real range runs from $31,585 to $41,035 (our calculation). The five optional colors each add $595; only Navy Blue Mica is free.
Bigger Than the Old CX-5
The redesign added 4.5 inches to the length and the wheelbase, according to Mazda‘s reveal release. The extra space went mostly to the back seat and the cargo area, which is almost two inches longer and over an inch taller than before.
Mazda hasn’t published a cubic-foot cargo figure in those releases, so compare it in person if you haul strollers or sports gear.
Fuel Economy Is the Weak Spot
The EPA rates the 2026 CX-5 at 24 mpg city, 30 highway and 26 combined (9.0 L/100 km). Ratings for the 2027 model weren’t posted on fueleconomy.gov when we checked, but the powertrain is unchanged.
Say you drive 12,000 miles a year. At 26 mpg that’s about 462 gallons of regular gas (our calculation).
Mazda said in 2025 that a hybrid CX-5 was planned for 2027, but the 2027 pricing release lists only the 2.5-liter engine.
Which Trim to Buy
The base 2.5 S is better equipped than the price suggests. It already has blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, radar cruise control, Google built-in and a power driver’s seat.
For $2,150 more, the S Select adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry, wireless charging and leatherette seats. If I had to pick one trim, it would be this one.
The S Preferred makes sense in cold climates because it adds heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, along with 19-inch wheels and a power liftgate. The top Premium Plus is the only trim with the 15.6-inch screen, a 360-degree camera and driver monitoring.
Strong Crash-Test Results
IIHS lists the 2026 CX-5 as a Top Safety Pick+, its highest award. It earned Good ratings in the small overlap, updated moderate overlap and updated side tests.
Headlights are where trims differ. Only the Premium Plus gets curve-adaptive LED headlights rated Good, while the other four trims are rated Acceptable.
NHTSA hadn’t published crash ratings for the 2026 CX-5 at the time of writing.
Who the CX-5 Suits
But isn’t 26 mpg a dealbreaker? Not for everyone. Standard all-wheel drive, a geared automatic and a top IIHS award make it a solid pick for buyers who value safety and winter traction over fuel savings.
High-mileage commuters should look at hybrid SUVs first, then come back to the CX-5 if the price gap is too wide.
Check fueleconomy.gov again before you buy, because the official 2027 ratings hadn’t been posted yet.
Prices, specifications, trims and availability vary by model year and market and can change at any time. Check the manufacturer’s official site or an authorized dealer before you buy.
