2027 Subaru Forester Review: Gas vs Hybrid, Price, Safety

Subaru trimmed the gas lineup for 2027 and added a Wilderness Hybrid. Here's how the nine trims compare on price, mpg and safety.

Car Buying

Katamereka Cars – Last year you could still buy a gas Forester in Sport or Touring trim. For 2027, Subaru dropped both, and the hybrid now covers most of the upper end of the lineup, including a new Wilderness Hybrid.

This review covers the 2027 Forester sold in the US, using Subaru’s September 2026 pricing release, EPA figures for the 2026 model and published crash-test results. Every version has all-wheel drive, so the real choice is gas or hybrid, then the trim.

Prices for Every Trim

The gas Forester starts at $29,995, the same as last year, and the hybrid starts at $34,730. Prices below exclude the $1,525 destination charge.

TrimPowertrainMSRP
BaseGas$29,995
PremiumGas$31,995
Premium HybridHybrid$34,730
LimitedGas$37,595
Sport HybridHybrid$37,930
Limited HybridHybrid$38,995
WildernessGas$39,495
Wilderness HybridHybrid$40,495
Touring HybridHybrid$41,545

With destination added, the range runs from $31,520 to $43,070 (our calculation).

Gas or Hybrid Engine

The gas Forester uses a 2.5-liter boxer engine with 180 hp (134 kW). The hybrid pairs an Atkinson-cycle version of that engine with electric motors for 194 hp (145 kW) combined. Both use a CVT, a transmission that uses a belt instead of fixed gears.

The bigger gap is fuel use. The EPA rates the 2026 gas Forester at 29 mpg combined (8.1 L/100 km) and the hybrid at 35 mpg (6.7 L/100 km). Subaru quotes up to 597 miles (961 km) of range on a tank for the hybrid.

How Much the Hybrid Saves

Say you drive 12,000 miles a year. The gas model would use about 414 gallons and the hybrid about 343, a difference of roughly 71 gallons (our calculation).

The Premium Hybrid costs $2,735 more than the gas Premium. How fast that pays back depends on local gas prices. The hybrid makes the most sense for drivers who cover a lot of miles or keep their cars for many years.

The Wilderness Hybrid

The new Wilderness Hybrid starts at $40,495 and sits 9.3 inches (23.6 cm) off the ground, compared with at least 8.7 inches on other trims. It adds all-terrain tires and Subaru’s dual-mode X-MODE for loose surfaces.

The gas Wilderness is the thirstiest version, with an EPA rating of 26 mpg combined for 2026. For $1,000 more, the Wilderness Hybrid pairs that off-road kit with the hybrid powertrain. Subaru hadn’t published its EPA rating at the time of writing.

Safety and Tech

Every 2027 Forester comes with EyeSight, Subaru’s camera-based driver-assist system. Most gas trims get an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the Base model uses two 7-inch screens and wired phone connections.

IIHS lists the 2026 Forester as a Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings in the small overlap, updated moderate overlap and updated side tests. Its headlights are rated Good on every trim.

NHTSA gave the 2026 gas Forester and Forester Hybrid 5 stars overall.

Which Forester to Pick

But is the Base model too basic? Its weak points are the smaller screens and wired phone connection.

The Premium moves to the 11.6-inch screen with wireless connections for $2,000 more.

For most buyers, the Premium Hybrid is the sweet spot: the hybrid’s better mileage without paying for leather or off-road hardware. Pick the Wilderness Hybrid only if you’ll actually use the extra clearance.

The Forester’s quiet strength is consistency: every trim, from $29,995 up, gets all-wheel drive and EyeSight.

Prices, specifications, trims and availability vary by model year and market and can change at any time. Check the manufacturer’s official site or an authorized dealer before you buy.
