Katamereka Cars – Is the Sportage Hybrid worth it over the gas model? For 2027 the answer is easier, because Kia now sells a front-wheel-drive hybrid for $1,600 more than the cheapest gas Sportage. It’s rated at 41 mpg combined, versus 28 for the gas version.
This review covers the 2027 Sportage sold in the US, including the gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, based on Kia’s official pricing releases, EPA ratings and crash-test results. Here’s how the lineup breaks down.
Prices Across the Lineup
The gas Sportage starts at $28,990, the hybrid at $30,590 and the plug-in hybrid at $40,590. Kia adds a $1,495 destination charge, so the cheapest Sportage costs $30,485 before taxes (our calculation).
| Version | Trim and drive | MSRP | EPA combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas | LX FWD | $28,990 | 28 mpg |
| Gas | LX AWD | $30,790 | 26 mpg |
| Hybrid | LX FWD | $30,590 | 41 mpg |
| Hybrid | S AWD | $32,890 | 35 mpg |
| Plug-in hybrid | X-Line AWD | $40,590 | 36 mpg (gas only) |
| Gas | X-Pro AWD | $39,890 | 24 mpg |
The Front-Drive Hybrid Stands Out
Front-wheel drive is new for the hybrid’s S and EX trims this year, and it joins the LX. The EPA rates front-drive hybrids at 41 mpg combined (5.7 L/100 km), compared with 35 mpg (6.7 L/100 km) for all-wheel-drive hybrids.
Say you drive 12,000 miles a year. A gas LX FWD would burn about 429 gallons, while the hybrid LX FWD would use about 293, a gap of roughly 136 gallons (our calculation). That’s a solid return on a $1,600 price difference.
Hybrids use a 1.6-liter turbo engine with an electric motor and a 6-speed automatic, while gas models use a 2.5-liter engine with an 8-speed automatic.
Plug-In Hybrid for Short Commutes
The plug-in hybrid can cover about 33 miles (53 km) on electricity in EPA testing, then runs as a hybrid rated at 36 mpg. Kia says it carries over unchanged for 2027.
At $40,590, it costs $7,700 more than a Hybrid S AWD, so it makes sense mainly if you can charge at home and drive short distances most days.
What the Trims Add
The X-Line now includes a panoramic sunroof and a power liftgate as standard, features that were part of a package last year. The rugged X-Pro is gas-only and the least efficient Sportage, at 24 mpg combined (9.8 L/100 km).
On the hybrid X-Line, a new Technology Package adds a 360-degree camera, a 12.3-inch digital cluster with navigation, Harman Kardon audio and Highway Drive Assist.
Safety Ratings and Build Dates
IIHS names the 2026 Sportage a Top Safety Pick+, but only for vehicles built after May 2025. That’s when Kia changed the rear seat belts, which earned it a Good rating in the updated moderate overlap test.
Headlights vary by trim. The SX Prestige and X-Pro Prestige are rated Good, while LX, EX, X-Line and SX headlights are rated Acceptable. NHTSA gave the 2026 gas and hybrid Sportage 5 stars overall.
If you’re shopping a leftover 2026 or a used one, check the build month on the certification label in the driver’s door jamb.
Which Sportage to Buy
I’d pick the Hybrid LX or Hybrid S with front-wheel drive. They’re the most efficient versions in the lineup and cost little more than the gas LX. Choose all-wheel drive only if you regularly drive on snow or unpaved roads, since it costs 6 mpg on the hybrid.
Which matters more to you: the hybrid’s lower fuel bills or the X-Pro’s off-road look?
Prices, specifications, trims and availability vary by model year and market and can change at any time. Check the manufacturer’s official site or an authorized dealer before you buy.
